SAJAKA 2024
The Antibiotic-Wise Village (SAJAKA) is a program by the One Health Collaborating Center (OHCC) at Udayana University that aims to tackle the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a serious global health concern. This program is supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). It was initiated and implemented through the One Health Workforce-Next Generation (OHW-NG) Project by OHCC Udayana University in collaboration with the Indonesia One Health University Network (INDOHUN).
After its successful implementation in 2021-2022 in Bengkel Village, Tabanan, Bali, SAJAKA's findings from that period indicated that respondents considered antibiotics necessary for sore throats (75%), fever (72.1%), and coughs and colds (66.6%). Furthermore, a significant portion of respondents had used antibiotics without a prescription to treat fever (56.1%) and sore throats (50%).
Based on these findings, OHCC Udayana University expanded SAJAKA to four other villages: Pejaten, Nyitdah, Beraban, and Belalang, all within Tabanan Regency, in 2023-2024, with support from Pfizer Indonesia. The scope of the SAJAKA program this year also broadened to include educational and socialization activities in households and schools, training village cadres, and signing memorandums of understanding for AMR management in these four villages. This year's SAJAKA program emphasizes involving families, healthcare workers, and students as agents of change. To further strengthen the collaboration and support provided by the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology and USAID over the past three years, Pfizer Indonesia's support for the SAJAKA program demonstrates the private sector's commitment to actively engaging in AMR management efforts. With its expertise and experience in healthcare, Pfizer provides implementation support for activities that highlight its dedication to public health and quality of life.
